Role Overview

Join n8n as an Engineering Manager to lead and grow our Community Engineering team, enabling high-quality community-driven development across our open workflow orchestration platform. You'll guide a cross-functional team of 3 Community Engineers who work closely with external contributors to turn community contributions into reliable product value.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering leadership, open-source community management, and product development. You'll build and refine the processes, tooling, and feedback loops that help external contributors ship high-quality code, nodes, and improvements while maintaining our standards for quality and consistency. Your work will directly influence our ecosystem quality, developer experience, and ability to scale community-driven innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of 3 Community Engineers working across contributor support, reviews, bug fixing, and ecosystem quality
  • Build and refine processes, tooling, and feedback loops that help external contributors ship high-quality code and improvements
  • Oversee community pull requests, node submissions, and bug fixes to ensure they meet quality standards
  • Partner with product teams like Nodes to reduce maintenance burden from community contributions
  • Identify friction in contributor workflows and implement solutions to improve developer experience
  • Step in hands-on to review code, unblock technical issues, or support complex contributor workflows
  • Help shape team growth through hiring, onboarding, and defining performance standards
  • Surface recurring contributor pain points and work with engineering teams to address them
  • Increase team leverage through automation, documentation, and scalable working methods

Requirements

  • Engineering management experience with ability to coach and grow technical individual contributors
  • Broad technical credibility with ability to read code, guide reviews, and navigate engineering workflows
  • Hands-on mindset willing to review PRs, unblock technical issues, and improve processes directly
  • Open source or developer community experience with understanding of external contributor workflows
  • Fluency with GitHub and contribution workflows including pull requests, forks, and code review
  • Systems thinking ability to identify bottlenecks and process gaps for scalable improvements
  • Experience in fast-moving startup or high-growth product environments
  • Strong n8n familiarity with advanced-level usage and understanding of the product ecosystem

Nice to Have

  • DevRel or Developer Experience background supporting developers beyond immediate team
  • Experience with APIs, developer tooling, extensible platforms, or integration-heavy products
  • Security-minded technical experience requiring sound judgment across varied contexts
  • TypeScript/Node.js familiarity and ability to build context in JavaScript environments
  • Open-source contribution history with firsthand knowledge of good contributor experience
